Xithrone is an antibiotic that effectively treats pneumonia and kills certain types of bacteria that infect the body. It also works in the treatment of middle ear infections.
Dosage and method of use:
- If you have tablets or liquid, you can take them with or without food.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.
- adult dose
- It's usually taken once daily, unless you're taking it by injection.
- Try to take your medicine at the same time each day.
- The usual dose is 500 mg daily for 3 to 10 days depending on the infection being treated.
- For some infections, you'll get a higher dose of 1g or 2g.
- The dose may be lower if you have liver or kidney problems.
- Azithromycin is sometimes prescribed long-term to prevent chest infections if you keep getting them. In this case, it is usually taken 3 times a week, often on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
- Children's dose
- Oral: 10 to 12 mg/kg/dose on the first day (usual maximum dose: 500 mg/dose)
