- Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic.
- Azithromycin inhibits the synthesis of proteins in bacteria and germs, which limits their growth and reproduction. It is a widely used antibiotic.
Dosage and method of use:
Adult dose:
- It's usually taken once daily, unless you're taking it by injection.
- Try to take your medicine at the same time each day.
- The usual dose is 500 mg daily for 3 to 10 days depending on the infection being treated.
- For some infections, you'll get a higher dose of 1g or 2g.
- The dose may be lower if you have liver or kidney problems.
- Azithromycin is sometimes prescribed long-term to prevent chest infections if you keep getting them. In this case, it is usually taken 3 times a week, often on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Children's dose:
- Oral: 10 to 12 mg/kg/dose on the first day (usual maximum dose: 500 mg/dose).
- Then followed by 5 to 6 mg/kg once daily (usual maximum dose: 250 mg/dose) for the remainder of treatment.
- Intravenous: 10 mg/kg once daily; Maximum dose: 500 mg/dose.
Elderly dose:
- Same dose for adults.
- Warning: It is preferable that the dosage be determined by a specialist doctor or pharmacist.
Indications:
Azithromycin is used to treat the following:
- Otitis media pharyngitis.
- Tonsillitis.
upper respiratory infection such as:
- Bronchial infections.
- Rhinitis.
- Pharyngitis, etc.
- Infection of the skin and its parts.
- Some types of pneumonia.
- Inflammatory pelvic disease.
- Urethritis, sexually transmitted.
- Sexually transmitted cervicitis.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Acute bacterial sinusitis.
- In some cases, it may be used as an alternative to penicillin, for patients with penicillin allergy.
